Meet the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Team!
We couldn’t do what we do without the help of volunteers and the supporting team.
These are some of the familiar faces you’ll meet at the site and URC events.

Frank Giecco
Frank Giecco (left in the picture) is the Technical Director at SLR Consulting in Carlisle. Frank is the Archaeological Director and one of the Trustees and founders of the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Charity. Frank has been there since the beginning, when the very first investigations took place in 2017. His enthusiasm for the site is unending.
A highly experienced archaeologist with over 25 years' running and managing field archaeology projects throughout Cumbria, the UK, and overseas, with a particular interest in community archaeology.
Frank is a numismatist (coin specialist) and has a vast amount of experience across the archaeology of Cumberland.
Frank delivers a lot of his support to the project in his own time, and he is a local TV personality to those following the dig.

Chloe Brownlee-Chapman
Chloe is one of the Trustees and founders of the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Charity. She is an independent archaeologist with 20 years’ experience in project development, funding and implementation.
Chloe is a strong believer in the power of a community and is engaged in several vibrant community projects, including Uncovering Roman Carlisle.
Chloe supports our Schools Engagement and sets up our booking systems (for her sins!). You’ll find her supervising, tour guiding, or schools leading!

Nick Henderson
Nick has been involved in the project since 2019, working on the funding bids. You will see him supporting the dig actively on site and behind the scenes, having been one of the Trustees and founders of the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Charity.
You might hear him teaching the school children the Roman Army drill!
Nick Henderson is a Regeneration Officer at Cumberland Council, with a focus and interest on Heritage and Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site having worked across the Wall.
Nick’s projects such as Uncovering Roman Carlisle, are focused on the use of Heritage as a means of encouraging regeneration and community benefit. If you see him on site feel free to chat, and talk about your experiences.

Anna Giecco
Anna is one of the Trustees and founders of the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Charity, archaeologist and photographer working on the site and project since 2017. With a particular interest in archaeological photography and Roman arts and culture.
Her beautiful photographs of intaglios helped to catapult the story of the site and their discovery globally.
Anna has since been developing and creating the branding, merchandise, supporting the website and talks, as well publishing books with Prof Reverent Martin Henig on the Intaglios.
You’ll find Anna on site supervising volunteers, in a trench, or discovering something new!

Kevin Mounsey
Kevin has been involved since 2017 and is a very experienced archaeologist.
A dab hand at a neat context sheet and a tidy section. He has trained many of our volunteers and continues to support the project.
Kevin has dug multi period sites across Cumbria and further afield, including a great number of Roman sites. Through work on the project Kevin won the Community Archaeologist of the Year award in 2021 from the Council for British Archaeology.

Mark Graham
Mark is a specialist in training in archaeology and has led community excavations across Europe, including on Hadrian’s Wall and Viking sites in Cumbria.
Mark runs Grampus Heritage and Training Ltd and you will find him on site as an archaeologist. Mark is the Project Manager for Erasmus Plus vocational and higher education European work placements in archaeology, environmental management and traditional skills.Mark is a community archaeologist through and through.

Jane Openshaw
Jane is a site archaeologist working part time with SLR Consulting, and supporting the project on an of the site with talks, research, and wonderful pictures.
Jane began her involvement with URC originally as one of the Diggers, volunteering on site and supporting the education groups (along with her Collie Suki). With a specialism in Roman Women, and engaging in works at Ribchester and the Roman settlement there.
Jane also splits her time during the season with her girls, a heard of cows where she is the milk maid (or matron).

Faye
Faye takes care of the small finds and coordinated the volunteers doing the wet sieving on the site during the season, one of the most fascinating areas to be!
She began her involvement on site as one of the Diggers volunteering her time and occasionally with the help of her children. Having studied archaeology in the past, Faye has taken it up again and now works as an archaeologist with SLR Consulting
