The second book from URC, looking further in to the amazing finds from the Severan drain at the site of a Severan Mansio complex found at Carlisle Cricket club.
The discovery of a monumental Severan complex on the eastern edge of Carlisle Cricket Club in 2017 led to a series of excavations to aid interpretation and find the extent of the site. Substantial stone lined drains were recorded, the fill of which yielded a remarkable assemblage of personal items that were lost between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD.
The finds include an assemblage of Roman intaglios (engraved gemstones) that form one of the largest collections found in the UK. Other significant finds lost in the drains include bone hair pins, needles, beads, and gaming counters. These artefacts add to our knowledge of Roman Carlisle and day to day life on the Roman frontier.
