The ‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle Skills Programme’ was an Introduction to Archaeology and Heritage Guiding course organised by Cumberland Council, Wardell Armstrong, Inspira and others, aimed at giving participants hands-on experience in the heritage and archaeology sector. The course ran from December 2024 to March 2025 as a 21 day training programme that included tour guiding training, first aid, employment training and 10 days practical archaeological training on the excavations at Carlisle Cricket Club.
The tour guiding course included practical tour experience around museums and historic sites in Carlisle. The archaeology training was certified with a British Archaeological Jobs & Resources Passport (BAJR Passport) recording the skills and activities completed and can be taken to any archaeological employer as proof of competence. Each of the trainees had a unique experience of the course and the on-site archaeology.
