Explore Carlisle’s Roman Bathhouse

The Uncovering Roman Carlisle is an ongoing community archaeology project, exploring and exhibiting Carlisle’s Roman Bathhouse.

The project grew from humble beginnings when archaeologists from Wardell Armstrong LLP were commissioned by Carlisle Cricket Club to undertake an evaluation for a new Cricket Pavilion in 2017, and discovered a Roman Bathhouse, now the largest known building on Hadrian’s Wall.

Returning to the site every year since 2021, a partnership of Carlisle Cricket Club, Cumberland Council, Tullie, and Wardell Armstrong has brought hundreds of volunteers, The Diggers, to further explore the site, and to exhibit the discoveries to the world.

Supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we will be returning to site in 2024. Come and join us!

How can you get involved?

There are a lot of ways to get involved, from visiting to volunteering, find out more below.

You can find bookings on the Get Involved page. We are releasing bookings in blocks and there are sometimes cancellations so roles may become available which currently appear booked up. Roles will come and go depending on the phase of the project and what activity is happening, so do check back or register your interest.

We will be returning to the site at Carlisle Cricket Club between the 11th of May and 15th of June 2024. Site days are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm.

Site Tours and Visiting

Pop along and meet the team to see what has been discovered. We are on site every day, Monday to Saturday 10.30am-3.30pm.

Volunteer guides will lead tours throughout the day. If you are bringing a group of over 10 people we would advise a group booking, click the link and get in touch.

Bear in mind it is an active archaeological site, some areas will be muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear!
